Glen Campbell

When someone famous or somewhat famous who does dangerous things for fame, fortune or ego dies in the act of such folly, a common phrase heard is "At least he died doing something he loved."

Such bullshit.  Odd how you never hear that about someone who really loves doing home repair and accidentally pops himself in the head with a nailgun.  That guy is just an idiot who should have been more careful, right? Though he too died doing something he loved.  What makes him different? It would have been a whole lot better for his friends and family to take more care and see to it that he LIVED doing something he loved.  And likewise with the other bozos I referred to above.  Those guys are usually idiots who should have been more careful with their responsibilities.

On the other hand.  I saw Glen Campbell last night at Ravinia, another stop on his "Goodbye Tour".  He is living doing something he loves, while he still has the capacity and the time to do it.  You see, Glen Campbell is dying of Alzheimer's.  It shows.  But the only concession he has made to it, aside from having his band (with three of his children) keep an eye on him, is a teleprompter.  When he lost his spot or missed a chord or played in the wrong key, that's just how it goes.  But he sure was enjoying himself.  Especially "Dueling Banjos" with his daughter.

If you are going to go out doing something you love, I like the Glen Campbell version a whole lot better.
